8 iron hit just right (for a change), though the bottom of the pin was hidden and we didn’t see the ball go in. Nice bonus upon arrival at the green though….

Took a driver on a downhill Par 4. the green (and the hole on this occasion) is partially hidden from the tee. I thought I’d hit it my tee shot well, and it was somewhere near, but when I got to to the green, thought it had gone through the back. I looked around for a minute or two, never dreaming it would be in the hole but sure enough, there it was! Just as my fellow golfers arrived to celebrate with me.

I arrived at the par 3 11 having not had a stellar round up to that point (I’d used all of my 12 allocated shots in the front 9), so I was just focussed on having a steady back 9 and hopefully collect a handful of pars to get a respectable score. The 11th at Ryton can be quite an intimidating hole at 178 yards from an elevated tee and a slope to the left of the green that members will often play into for it to bounce onto the green. There’s out of bounds both left and right on the hole, with a public path (and the Tyne River) to the right and train tracks to the left. Any mishits on this hole especially in a medal can ruin your card! Anyway, onto the shot. I was last in my 4 ball to play, and a couple of my playing partners mentioned that it felt like there was a slight headwind. Having already picked up my 6 iron, I’d decided not to take an extra club for the wind but rather give my 6 iron a full hit. Having made sure that the pathway on the right-hand side was clear, I’d completed my practice swing and addressed the ball. The contact on the ball was great and I was relatively pleased with it as it started online with the pin just arching left towards the bank. Knowing the ball was going to land safe and feed in towards the green, I’d assumed it would just settle in the middle of the green, so went to pick my tee out the ground. This is when I heard the players in my group shout in unison “ITS IN!! ITS GONE IN!!!”, followed by them running towards me to congratulate me. At this point (for a split second) I thought they were having me on and joking with me, but it dawned on me that they were telling the truth when I couldn’t see my ball. I was obviously ecstatic to have made a hole in one as I’d just assumed, over my 20+ years playing, like many others that it probably wouldn’t happen to me, but then some mild panic began to set in. How much is this going to cost me at the bar? Because I’d assumed it wouldn’t happen, I’d never had to worry about the post HIO etiquette and drink buying. As soon as the round finished, I ran over to my car (still leaving my clubs in the car park) and drove to the nearest off-licence to get a bottle of whiskey. I arrived back at the club just in time for the other 4 ball in our regular group to finish their round so I could pour out the whiskey (before leaving that at the bar for the other players and visitors) and get them all a pint. The true gravity of the situation I guess will sink in eventually, but for now I still can’t quite believe it has happened. The ball is safely out of the golf bag so it can’t be mistakenly used & is just waiting for me to get something to display it properly.

I took a driver as the par 3 sixteenth hole had been extended for our Club Championship prior to my round so was playing long uphill. I faded the ball into the banking in front of the green which allowed it to bounce a couple of times and disappear into the hole for my hole in one.

hole 10 over the loch with the captain watching and the wind blowing against mad me take a 3 wood which I hit well but thought it ran down from the bank behind the green into the water - the Captain said it looked as I dropped in ( meaning I thought into the loch so played a provisional then walked down the the green via the end of the loch and looke for my ball but no luck so played my provisional ball but didn’t score and picked up but my partner played his ball and parted the hole then asked what ball was I playing — and yes my ball was in the hole! when the captain said he thought it dropped in - he meant the hole!
