The most common prize for a hole-in-one in professional golf seems to be a car.
And if you are lucky (skilful) enough to make an ace in a club competition in the UK at a club registered with HowDidiDo then you win a magnificent Boss Watch.
Many charity, society and corporate golf days will have a hole in one prize which is insured – often a holiday or a car or a rather nice amount of cash.
But there have been some more rather unusual prizes for a hole-in-one.
In 2011 Elliot Saltman made an ace at the Madrid Masters and won his weight in Iberico ham. Then weighing 17 stone, Saltman’s prize amounted to €8,000 worth of meat.
Perhaps the most well-known weird prize was Andy Sullivan’s reward at the 2014 KLM Open. The Englishman needed just one perfectly executed nine-iron at Kennemer Golf & Country Club’s 163-yard 15th, resulting in the offer to board sponsor XCOR Space Expedition’s flight 330,000ft above the earth’s surface.
Yes – a trip to space – worth £60,000, which we don’t believe he has yet taken.
Andrew “Beef” Johnston won 168 bottles of Champagne in 2012 – one for each yard of the 11th he aced at Castle Stuart Golf Links. He won a BMW M4 three years later for a rather more conventional pro-prize!!
Another drinkers prize was taken home by Wade Ormsby when he won a year’s supply of beer courtesy of Warsteiner – and admitted a year later he was still manfully battling through it.
We’d rather have the $2.5m that was on offer to help mark the 25th anniversary of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic in 2014 for an ace on the Par 4, 325-yard 17th.
Sadly, it went unclaimed.
Not quite so impressive was the “special” Moroccan lamp Graeme Storm now has in his garage for his hole-in-one at the Trophee Hassan II.
Thankfully for Storm also in the garage is the $100,000 BMW i8 he won at the 2014 Omega European Masters.
You’d need a big garage to house the Volvo excavator up for grabs at one event. Nobody made a hole-in-one, but Louis Oosthuizen fancied the excavator so much he swapped his Pro-Am prize of a car for the hole-in-one prize.
So, Boss Watch, ham, digger, car – what have you won?
Or have you just lost a round of drinks?
