Two years ago, accountant Gillian Holder came home to the news her husband had not only achieved his first hole-in-one, but also won himself a BOSS watch.
Not to be outdone, the determined 19-handicapper, from Lincoln, resolved to match her husband’s feat, and was given the perfect opportunity during the end-of-season Stableford at their home club, Canwick, when she aced the 102-yard, par-three seventh.
And now it’s all square between them: each has a hole-in-one, as well as membership of the exclusive BOSS Watches H1Club and a specially-commissioned, commemorative timepiece.
She said: “When my husband, Paul, got a hole-in-one on the 191-yard, par-three fifth, I hoped, one day, I might get one too.
“It was funny because the night before my hole-in-one was actually our anniversary, and, when we went out for a meal, he was wearing his BOSS watch. I sat there and said to him: ‘I’m going to get one of those tomorrow’, and then I did – what are the odds?
“I was determined to get my handicap down to 18 by the end of the season and this was my last opportunity. I must admit, my round wasn’t going very well until my ace on the seventh. Overall, it was an awful round of golf, but it was made all the sweeter by the hole-in-one.”
The Holders play together regularly, often competing on the same team during mixed competitions, but now the gauntlet has been thrown and it’s a race to see who’ll get their second ace first.
