Magical moments at Melton Mowbray

By James Dobbin

The elusive hole-in-one shot is sought by many and attained by few, but Guy Rayson has just achieved the feat for the 15th time and he’s showing no signs of slowing down.

What’s more, he’s already achieved the feat this year, which means he’ll be rewarded with a second limited-edition BOSS watch as recognition for the achievement.

Rayson, 56, from Melton Mowbray, scored his latest ace with a five-iron on the 173-yard, par-three seventh at his club, Melton Mowbray, and the six-handicapper was rewarded with membership of the exclusive BOSS Watches H1 Club and a specially-commissioned, commemorative timepiece.

He said: “I hit a well struck five-iron, which pitched on the front of the green and ran directly towards the hole. The ball seemed to disappear as it reached the pin; we thought it had gone past the pin and down on to the 14th green.

“When we arrived at the green I was nervously excited not to see a ball past the flag, so I cautiously approached the hole and was thrilled to see the ball sitting at the bottom of the cup.”

While Rayson admits to having had a few close calls at various other courses, all his aces were achieved at his home club, Melton Mowbray, where he has held membership since 1970, at the age of 12.

He recalls his first hole-in-one most vividly, which he scored on the original nine-hole course – its par-three ninth – at the age of 14, and the ball was mounted on a wooden stand which is still in existence today.

Remarkably, Rayson has accomplished an ace on every par three at Melton Mowbray, both on the original nine-hole course and its extended 18-hole version.

He added: “There is no secret to achieving a hole-in-one; obviously if you hit the correct club, are reasonably accurate, have played for 40-plus years, and have played thousands of par-threes – as I have – then you improve your chances, but clearly there is a huge element of luck involved.”
