Three pairs of golfers record aces at three different clubs

By James Dobbin

Six lucky golfers recently recorded a staggering six aces in three different club competitions – and each was rewarded with their very own BOSS timepiece.

First to triumph were a pair of Manor GC golfers in Staffordshire who achieved the rare feat when they each scored a hole-in-one during a monthly medal … while playing together.

On the tee first at the Kingstone venue was 22-handicapper Geoffrey Sale, 71, from Abbots Bromley, who aced the 165-yard, par-three second. But before he and his playing partner had time to finish celebrating, eight-handicapper Andrew Darling, 61, from Bramshall, holed out on the 188-yard, par-three fifth, to cap an astonishing first five holes.

Next to conquer the odds were two Wolverhampton golfers who had fellow club members agog when they scored holes-in-one during the same club competition.

South Staffordshire Golf Club’s midweek Stableford competition saw five-handicapper Robert Barrett and Colin Woolley, who plays off three, ace different holes, and the latter went on to win the day on countback from the former.

Barrett, 63, scored his ace on the 141-yard, par-three sixth, while Woolley, 55, followed suit on the 168-yard par-three 15th.

Barrett said: “The pin was behind a front bunker so I couldn’t see the hole. Three of my pals on the next tee watched my shot, hit with a nine iron, and kept watching. They all waved their arms, pointing at the ground and my partner said it must have gone in. I was in shock as I would have been happy to get a two!”

And the golfing gods were last to smile on two Cheltenham golfers who aced the same hole, also in the same club competition.

Lilley Brook Golf Club’s seniors Derek Harris Trophy saw eventual winner Martin Widdowson, 68, a 15-handicapper, and Don Barnes, 79, who plays off 14, ace the 146-yard, par-three 11th and the lucky pair captured the moment with a photo, above.
