Ian records an unusual 'double'

An amateur golfer from Upminster scored two holes-in-one, on the same hole, in a fortnight – and even had a photographer on hand to record the second.

Ian Law, 44, a member at Upminster Golf Club, recorded his first ace in a social round with friends – “a team waltz!” – on the 131-yard, par-three 18th. And, when he was next due to play – in a monthly medal – to commemorate the achievement, the club’s competition secretary, Dennis Broadway, stood alongside the 18th green waiting to take Law’s picture when he completed his round.

But, as Law explained, Broadway was able to capture an even more momentous occasion.

He said: “Before I teed off I saw Dennis stand up from a bench behind the green with his camera round his neck after recognising our group. I joked to my playing partners to smarten themselves up as they might be in the background of my picture.

“I teed off first, from the back tees, and there was a stiff wind against, so I took an extra club. I hit a lovely shot which hit the green – which is protected by bunkers and trees – and took a few hops. Then we saw it drop in the hole and when Dennis, who was greenside, put his thumbs up, our group was ecstatic.

“The others teed off and I strode up proudly to pick my ball out of the hole. We were the last group out, so the others were just off the green when I got my hole-in-one and a few of them saw it go in, so I had a nice reception when I got to Dennis and the other members of our group.

“They were astounded that I had done it again. I joked to Dennis that I saw him there waiting for me and thought I had to get another hole-in-one.”

Law’s second ace entitled him to win a limited-edition BOSS Watch because he scored it in an official club competition. The luxury German brand has once again pledged to reward club golfers with an exclusive watch for every hole-in-one recorded during a qualifying club competition in 2014 after giving away £600,000-worth of limited-edition mementos in 2013.

Law added: “I was made up when I received an email from HowDidiDo informing me that I would be getting a BOSS Watch for my achievement. I would have thought my first hole-in-one would have been the most memorable – but for me it was the second.”
