Michael Wards off challengers with albatross ace

Stoneham member is first to score hole-in-one on a par-four

Nearly 300 golfers have so far received a limited-edition BOSS watch for scoring a hole-in-one during a club competition, but Michael Ward (pictured above), from Southampton, has become the first to do so on a par-four!

Ward, 47, scored his ace on the 273-yard, par-four 13th, at his club, Stoneham, and the five-handicapper was rewarded with membership of the exclusive BOSS Watches H1 Club and a specially-commissioned, commemorative timepiece.

But it was the fact he’d scored an albatross – or double-eagle as it’s referred to on the US tours – that raises his achievement above all others.

Ward said: “This was my first hole in one in 30 years of trying. I made it with a three-wood.

“My playing partners were Tim Biggs and Dave Head, whom I’ve known for over 20 years. Tim and I didn’t play our best golf on the day, while Dave played very well, winning our roll-up money – 20 friends play for a small wager and the best score takes all. But Dave kindly donated half the pot towards my bar bill.

“I was so pleased with myself, not only for achieving a hole-in-one, but a hole-in-one on a par-four...! An albatross!”
