Kilkenny golfer Reay Brandon landed himself in hot water recently when he scheduled to play golf on the day of his 47th wedding anniversary.

But the retired businessman was able to dodge some of his wife’s wrath by achieving a hole-in-one on the day – which also won him a BOSS watch – making for a double celebration that night.

Brandon, 72, a 20-handicapper who moved from England to Ireland in 1972, scored his ace on the 174-yard, par-three 17th, during the men’s open singles competition at Kilkenny GC.

He said: “When I booked to play the game, I actually forgot it was my wedding anniversary, but my wife, after joking with me, told me I could play anyway. When I returned home, we were able to have a kind of double celebration.

“I only took up the sport in 2007, after I finished playing tennis due to bad knees, and this was my first hole-in-one. I couldn’t believe it. My wife had a hole-in-one four years ago, so it was great to finally even the score.”
